Miami Conservancy’s Great Miami River Recreation Trail began in 1978 as an eight-mile loop in downtown Dayton called the “Horace M. Huffman Jr. River Corridor Bikeway.” Today the trail extends south to Crains Run Metro Park near Franklin and north to Island Metro Park. The trail picks up again at Wagoner Ford and Needmore Roads and extends north to Taylorsville Dam and MetroPark. In the near future, the trail will connect with the existing trail at Island Metro Park. Plans also call for a connection to a 20-mile trail planned in Miami County.

A separate north trail extension along the Stillwater River extends from Island MetroPark across the Miami River into the City of Dayton's Triangle and DeWeese Parkway parks; passes through Wegerzyn Gardens and ends at Sinclair Park on Shoup Mill Road.

The Great Miami River Trail connects to an extensive network of other trails, including Wolf Creek Rail Trail, the Stillwater Trail, the Mad River Trail and Creekside Trail in Montgomery County and to more than 100 miles of trail in Clark, Greene, Warren and Clermont counties.
