PROCLAMATION
From the Office of the Mayor
WHEREAS, bicycle commuting is an acceptable form of transportation and is fundamental to the safety, health, welfare, and environmental security of Daytonians and to the economy of Dayton; and
WHEREAS, bicycle commuting is a transportation choice available to anyone regardless of age, race, social status or physical ability, and is needed for Dayton's continuing prosperity; and
WHEREAS, intermodal transportation provides the means for reducing traffic congestion, noise pollution and air pollution in Dayton; and
WHEREAS, bicycle commuting is a safe, affordable, and effective form of transportation to work, whose participants can physically benefit and become more efficient contributors to society and their employers; and
WHEREAS, the bicycle is a visible and accessible representation of a livable community, setting an example for all citizens of Dayton.
NOW, THEREFORE, I, MICHAEL R. TURNER, Mayor of the City of Dayton, do hereby proclaim MAY 23, 2001 as
BIKE-TO-WORK DAY
in Dayton.
