Two Wheels, One Voice.

2001 Strategic Plan

OUR INITIATIVES

We strive to promote, create and enable safe bicycling in the Miami Valley by:

  • Participating in city and county council meetings to officially represent the bicycle community.
  • Presenting bicycle-centered studies and speaking to area businesses and chambers of commerce about the economic impact of bikeways and facilities.
  • Developing and distributing area bicycle trail maps with Five Rivers MetroParks, Greene County Park District, Miami Conservancy District, Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission, Miami Valley AAA, and others.
  • Developing and maintaining the Miami Valley Alternative Transportation Alliance (MVATA) to promote bicycle commuting, which alleviates traffic congestion, improves mental and physical health (including employee attendance and productivity), and reduces gas-powered pollution dramatically. Ideas include:
  • Organizing Bike-to-Work Day, an annual event to promote bicycling, in each city as requested.

  • Educating and training local businesses with our Safe Bicycle Commuting Programs to attract more commuters.

  •   Partnering with area organizations and businesses (University of Dayton, Wright State University, Sinclair Community College, Miami Valley RTA, Miami Valley AAA, Dayton Cycling Club, Five Rivers MetroParks) to promote intermodal transportation.

  • Developing and distributing the Bicycle Friendly Manual, a guide for planning officials, engineers, developers and advocates locally, statewide, and nationwide.
  • Maintaining and updating www.bikemiamivalley.org to educate current and future bicyclists on the resources available in the Miami Valley.
  • Maintaining the Bike Miami Valley Facilities Committee, a focal point for influential organizations and professionals dedicated to bicycle facility development.
  • Lobbying local and federal government officials for continued TEA-21 and TEA-3 funding for enhancements. Bike Miami Valley strives to represent various Miami Valley organizations in Columbus and Washington, D.C.
  • Developing and promoting the Bicycle Institute to promote safe bicycling with schools, hospitals, fire and police departments, rangers, libraries, park and recreations departments, bike shops and the YMCA.
  • Working with various Miami Valley regional planning commissions to develop Regional Bikeway & Pedestrian Plans.
  • Informing Bike Miami Valley members of events, construction, and other newsworthy items via our monthly e-mail newsletter, “The Bicycle Papers.”
